Artist Statement

The work uses compressed chalk onto plywood.

My output over the last twelve months has mainly and continues to be particularly centred on the aim of seeking to open a dialogue with the viewer around the uncertainty of meaning as articulated through the un-decidability apparent in the mark making that is the essence of the work. Traces of traces, speak of absence and of presence. The interplay of meaning dissolves and arises in endless dialogue with the onlooker.

As the body of work has developed the theoretical structure that supports it has continued to reveal its pivotal role in the conceptual meaning of the work. Use of the writings of Derrida, especially his theories on deconstruction, has led to a more sophisticated and multi-layered approach, that places the work in a solid philosophical context which in turn underpins the visual manifestation of the pieces.

The mark making relates  directly to the philosophical intent, in that it seeks to articulate an interplay and un-decidability of the marks and the spaces they occupy. Absence and presence in constant flux, no centre, no origin a constant inter-dependence. Mark begins mark, as one dissolves another arises applied with an element of randomness and freeplay that allows a relinquishing of overall control in determining the final composition.

The work is constantly evolving, its objective, to create a situation on viewing where rationality becomes subordinate to instinct.  Trust ones instinct and be in intimate touch with what surrounds you.  Think differently.
