Janine is interested in how the imagination interprets images, often referring to the exhibition as 'Cloudwatching.' The work uses a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installation which are all based on emotional responses to nature. Janine likes to push the boundaries in her experimentation of materials using some traditional methods that have been forgotten combined with then with recent developments.

Some of the work on display includes photographs of natural textures from various sources and countries such as; ice from a glacier, dried mudflats, rocks and tree bark, as well as installations where the spectator can interpret and  record two large paintings for themselves. Janine strongly believes that one should use all the senses when exploring a subject, therefore she may paint, sculpt, photograph, install, touch, listen and taste to examine in depth a subject she is passionate about.

Janine’s work focuses primarily on emotions and how they are affected by creation; Reflecting our humanness in the  fear in the face of a typhoon or wonder at the opening of bud. The focus is not on nature itself but our reaction in the face of it.

Past explorations have included; joy of physical ability, helplessness at the power of a tsunami, fear of drowning, vulnerability in deprivation, the imagining in ‘cloud watching’ and wonder at the patterns in a natural texture.

Sometimes this creates a reaction to the memories and imagination triggered by the chaos of feelings initiated by an element of the natural force. Therefore often her work is symbiotic; the object in nature and the feelings about it, however occasionally the work brings something completely unexpected to the surface, dependant on the relationship the viewer has with the natural object in question, consequently Janine does not want to put thoughts into the observers mind, but to let them form their own interpretation,  aiming to engage the viewer to find their own understanding.
