JJ Fox competition

In its 28th year, the Fox Open Art Competition is an established art competition run annually and open to all Channel Islanders, whether professional or amateur artists.  This year’s prizes total £1,750 and are awarded to artists who, in the opinion of the judge, have produced the most original work of art. This year’s prizes are £1,000, £500 and £250 respectively for the overall winner, runner up and the category of 18 years and under.

Portrait and landscape artist Stephen Shankland is this year’s judge. His themes include narrative storytelling and symbolism as well as human relationship with nature and landscape. Draughtsmanship, composition, colour harmony, texture and handling of paint are all important elements to the final outcome of his pieces. Portrait commissions make up a large amount of his work and can be seen in private and public collections around the world. Stephen has collected many awards during his career, most notably in 2004 when he won first prize in the BP Portrait Award at The National Gallery, London, with a portrait of his wife and son titled The Miracle.

To avoid any bias and to retain integrity, a new judge is chosen each year who lives and works outside the Channel Islands.

The exhibition will subsequently tour to Guernsey and be exhibited at the Dorey Centre, St. James Concert and Assembly Hall from Tuesday 16 November until Saturday 4 December 2010.

The exhibition will display artwork from the competition, selected by Stephen Shankland. Previous Fox Open Art Competition exhibitions have always offered a diverse range of context, colour and texture.
